WHAT IS THE IRSCL?

The International Research Society for Children's Literature is a non-profit organisation devoted to promoting research and scholarship in children's literature. This is a specific profile of IRSCL, as compared to IBBY, International Reading Association and other international bodies promoting reading and literacy.

The IRSCL was founded in 1970 by seven children's books experts from Austria, Czechoslovakia, Federal Republic of Germany, Spain and Switzerland. Professor Klaus Doderer from West Germany was its first President. The first IRSCL congress was held in 1971 in Frankfurt.

The Society now has a world-wide membership of approximately 300 members from about 40 countries on five continents.

Membership of the Society is open to individuals engaged in research into children's and young people's literature and culture.

Institutional membership is open to libraries, journals, children's book collections, and other institutions whose activities are related to the aims
of the Society. Membership is acquired by written application and as a result of the decision of the Executive Board.
