University College of Worcester, England
Ph.D. Research Studentship

University College Worcester, England, is pleased to announce that applications are invited for a 3 year, full-time PhD research studentship. The intention of this PhD research studentship is to produce a literary study of the construct of the child in African American writing for adults and for children, and a consideration of ensuing inter-relationships. The study will focus on an examination of the function of genre in constructs and representations of the child. Reading across 'age barriers' throughout, the research will consider African American writing as a whole.

Candidates are invited to make their own proposals for consideration, suggesting texts and approaches to the study, as long as they fall within the broad parameters of the above. They are also required to send in a sample of their work with their application.

The student will receive a tax-free bursary of £9,000 per annum. Supervisory fees are also covered by the studentship, plus financial support for research activities, such as conference attendance.

The student will spend the majority of the time working at University College Worcester under the supervision of Dr. Jean Webb, and Dr. Jill Terry. There is also a link with San Diego State University, so the successful candidate will spend some time studying there with Dr. Carole Scott and colleagues. The travel costs to San Diego will be covered by the research support, which is in addition to the bursary; students will be expected to pay their own living costs whilst in San Diego. Research training will be provided at Worcester, plus linking the successful candidate into the NorChilNet European postgraduate and post-doctoral training programmes in children's literature. The student will be expected to carry out teaching in the English Dept. or research related duties up to a maximum of 6 hours per week.

A good first degree or relevant Masters is required.

The studentship will commence in September 2002.
